First Class in Astronomy Center
Today we conducted the first class in the astronomy center - Beginning Astronomical Observing. Twenty-nine people from age 8 to 80 attended. The first hour was devoted to observing with the unaided eye. The first topic was the Sun and many aspects of the Sun’s motions and behaviors were discussed. A simple sun dial kit was given to each student with instructions for use and further observation opportunities. Next came the Moon as a subject and the various opportunities to observe and learn about the Moon’s motions were covered. Then we discussed observing the stars and the basic characteristics of relative brightness, color and star patterns were covered. Instruction in the use of a planisphere was given and computer toos and other sources of information on when, where and how to observe the stars were covered.
The second hour discussed how telescopes help in viewing the stars and other objects and gave tips on the various types of telescopes and what to look for when acquiring a telescope.
