Astronomy Center
Our vision is to develop a public astronomy center at which we can greatly increase our delivery of quality astronomy experiences to the public in pursuit of our mission This astronomy center will feature large, computerized telescopes and other astronomical equipment that will excite and inspire peole of all ages and knowledge levels. We plan a meeting/exhibition hall suitable for use in public meetings, astronomy exhibits, K-12 field trips and more.
The sketch is a concept study for the desired facility. The building features 8,000 square foot of floor space, a 30-ft diameter planetarium dome, an office, two restrooms, a smaller meeting room of some 550 square feet and a reading room/lounge on the mezzanine. The 32-inch and 16-inch telescopes would be located in an observing field to the rear of hte building. Provision for personal telescopes would also be made. The grounds would be decorated with various astronomical themes such as a large sun dial, scale model of the Solar System and, possibly, a representation of Stone Henge painted on the inside curved wall. This concept shows north to the left but that would be adjusted depending upon the site and ambient light sources.

We are seeking a location that offers reasonable protection from ambient lights and is reasonably close to the population center of St. Charles County and nearby areas - not an easy quest in a rapidly growing area such as the Westplex area! We are exploring possible public/private partnerships for the land and would be happy to entertain ideas. We are a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization under IRS rules, so could offer tax deductions for donations of land.
We have been assembling equipment (see sub pages for the 32-in and 16-in telescopes) and are building a cadre of trained, enthusiastic volunteers to staff the astronomy center when the opportunity arises.
